Sun dials were the fist devices man designed to measure time.
As long as 5000 years ago the early advanced civilisations of
Egypt, Mesopotamia and China produced sophisticated sun dials.
Even today they exist on houses, in parks and public squares as
decorative items.
A sun dial shows the current local sun time, it does not care for
daylight saving time or time zones. The deviances and distortions
which results from the non-circular orbit of earth around the sun
show in the time readings.
Set the sun dial up in North-South direction with the build-in
compass. Now you can read the current sun time from the dial as
long as the sun is out.
