Installation
If you do not have the expertise required to carry out the installation, please
contact a specialist or a specialised outlet and let them do the installation!
Incorrect installation can cause damage both to the converter and also to your
computer and all connected devices.
Caution, lethal hazard!
Switch off the computer in which the converter is to be installed, and all con-
nected devices and disconnect all devices from the mains voltage; pull out the
mains plug! Just turning off at the on/off switch is not enough!
• Open your computer's housing and carefully remove the cover.
• Connect the converter with a SATA hard disc. To do this, attach it to the connection strip of the
hard disc. Mind the correct orientation of the connection strip and the converter.
The converter can also be used together with a CD, DVD or BluRay drive (each with
SATA connection).
• There is a pin strip "J2" on the converter. This can be used to connect an access LED (blinks
during read/write access); furthermore, write protection can be activated.
LED port: Connect the connecting plugs of the LED with pin 1 (LED +) and pin 2
(LED -).
Write protection: Connect pins 3 and 4 with a jumper. This activates the write
protection.
• Connect a suitable mains plug of your PC power adapter to the converter socket.
• Connect the USB3.0 socket with a USB3.0 port of your main board, using a suitable cable.
If no USB3.0 port is available, a USB2.0/1.1 port may be used as well. However,
keep in mind that the data transfer rate is slower in that case.
• If not done so yet, fix the drive to the PC housing with screws. Ensure that the screws do not extend
too far and damage the hard disc's electronic components.
• Secure all cables, so that they cannot slip out of the ports and so they do not obstruct a fan in
the PC case. Use cable ties for fixing, for example.
• Replace the computer case.
• Connect your computer and monitor to the mains voltage and switch on all devices.
• If your computer does not start up correctly, switch it off at once and check all the settings and
cable connections.
Before you open the computer again, it must be disconnected from the mains
voltage, see above!
Tips & notes
www.conrad.com
• The converter is USB2.0/1.1 compatible. That means that it can also be used with a common
USB2.0/1.1 port. However, the maximally achievable data transfer rate is slower.
Version 09/10
In order to take advantage of the high speed of USB3.0, all devices must support USB3.0. Only
connect the USB adapter to a USB3.0 port.
°
• However, the theoretical maximum speed of USB3.0 (or also USB2.0/1.1) is never reached
during practical operation. The reasons are protocol information, simultaneous operation of
several USB devices or the speed limit of the connected device or the USB controllers/main
boards.
• Normally, USB operation is not possible in DOS or in the protected mode of Windows.
Nevertheless, depending on the computer or BIOS /Setup settings, it is possible to use a USB
keyboard and a USB mouse. It is necessary, however, to connect them directly to the compu-
ter's USB interface, i.e. not to the USB Hub.
The drive connected via the converter is usually not available under DOS or in safe mode of
Windows (may depend on main board).
• USB devices can be plugged in and unplugged while the PC is in use. This means that you do
not have to switch off your computer, when you want to plug in or unplug devices (with other
interfaces this can cause damage, e.g. if you connect or disconnect a PS/2 mouse during ope-
ration).
If data transfers are in progress on the USB port, e.g. if an external disc is inputting data to the
computer, and you unplug the USB plug, Windows might crash or the data system on the disc
may be damaged!
• For some USB devices (e.g. USB hard drives) Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 dis-
plays an icon with an arrow in the menu bar. You can "separate" the USB device from the com-
puter using this function, and thus instruct the computer to close opened files. Afterwards, the
USB device can be unplugged safely.
• Only use suitable USB3.0 cables for the connection of USB3.0 devices. Please note that the
data transfer rate may decrease when the USB3.0 cables are very long.
