Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe
these safety instructions! We do not assume any liability for any consequen-
tial damage!
We do not assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by
improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions. In such cases
the warranty will be null and void.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modifi cation of the product is impermissible
for reasons of safety and regulation (CE). Never dismantle the product!
• This product is not a toy, and should be kept out of the reach of children.
• Use only in dry indoor locations. The product must not get damp or wet.
• Do not expose the product to extreme temperatures, direct intense sunlight, strong
vibrations, high humidity or strong mechanical stress.
• Do not leave packaging material lying around carelessly. It may become a danger-
ous plaything for children.
• Handle the product with care; it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental
drops, even from a low height.
Connection
• Disconnect the USB plug from the bottom from the USB hub and connect it to a free USB2.0
port on your computer (the computer does not need to be switched off).
If you do not have a USB2.0 interface in your computer (e.g., on the mainboard or
on a USB2.0 card), you can connect the USB hub to a USB1.1 port instead. How-
ever, the devices connected to the USB hub (no matter whether USB2.0 or USB.1.1)
will only work at the normal USB1.1 speed!
When connected to a USB3.0 port, the USB hub functions in the USB2.0 mode.
• Windows recognises the new hardware and installs the driver automatically (they are in-
cluded in the operating system, e.g., Windows XP and higher).
Operation
The USB hub functions in the so-called "Bus Powered Mode". This means that the current (up
to 500 mA), supplied from the computer via the USB, is distributed to the 4 ports.
This is suffi cient for most mice, keyboards, USB sticks and the like.
However, USB devices with a high power consumption (e.g., external hard drive
enclosures with 6.35cm/2,5" hard drives, USB fans or similar) cannot be operated
with it. Connect such devices directly to a free USB port on your computer.
Tips & Notes
www.conrad.com
• The USB2.0 hub is USB1.1 compatible. This means that normal USB1.1 devices can be used
with no problems on the USB2.0 Hub. However, this will not speed up the USB1.1 devices!
Version 04/11
Of course, the USB2.0 hub can also be used with a USB1.1 connection, e.g., if your computer
does not have a USB2.0 interface.
In this case, an increase in the data transmission speed is not possible.
• Connection to a USB3.0 port does not increase the speed; therefore, the USB hub (and con-
nected devices) will work in the USB2.0 mode.
• To take advantage of the fast USB2.0 speed (theoretically 480 MBit/s, i.e., 60 MByte/s), all of
the devices must support USB2.0: The USB device itself (e.g., an external DVD writer), the
USB hub and the USB controller inside the PC.
The theoretical maximum speed of 480 MBit/s is never achieved in practice. This is due to
protocol information, the simultaneous operation of several USB devices or the speed limit of
the connected USB device or USB controller on the motherboard or plug-in card.
• Correct USB2.0 operation does not require a special "USB2.0 cable". Conventional USB
cables are quite suffi cient, but they need to be shielded.
If transmission problems occur when using USB2.0 devices, you can try using a USB cable
that has been tested for USB2.0 operation (e.g., "USB2.0 certifi ed") or a shorter USB cable.
• Normally, USB operation is not possible in DOS or in the protected mode of Windows.
Nevertheless, depending on the computer or BIOS /Setup settings, it may be possible to use
a USB keyboard and a USB mouse. It is necessary, however, to connect them directly to the
computer's USB interface, i.e., not to the USB Hub.
• USB devices can be plugged in and unplugged while the PC is in use. This means that you do
not have to switch off your computer when you want to plug in or unplug devices (with other
interfaces this can cause damage, e.g., if you connect or disconnect a PS/2 mouse during
operation).
If data transfers are in progress on the USB port, e.g., if an external disk is inputting data to
the computer, and you unplug the USB plug, Windows might crash and other data may also
be damaged!
For some USB2.0 devices (e.g., USB hard drives) Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7
displays an icon with an arrow in the menu bar. Via this function you can "separate" the USB
device from the PC and therefore tell the PC to close open fi les. Afterwards, the USB device
can be unplugged safely.
• When you do not need the USB hub, you can plug-in the USB plug at the bottom.
