Safety instructions

The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe
these safety instructions. We do not assume any liability for any consequen-
tial damage!
We do not accept liability for damage to property or personal injury caused by
improper handling or non-compliance with the safety instructions! The war-
ranty will be void in such cases.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible
because of safety and approval reasons (CE).
• The design of the mains transformer complies with protection class II. Only con-
nect the power transformer to a 230V~/50Hz mains socket.
• Only use the delivered mains adapter for power supply of the housing and the
installed drives.
• The product must not get damp or wet as this may damage it, danger of a fatal
electric shock!
• The device is not a toy. Keep devices that operate on the mains voltage out of the
reach of children! Therefore, be especially careful when children are around.
• Do not leave packing materials unattended. They may become dangerous play-
things for children.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or accidental
drops, even from a low height.
Installation of an optical drive
• Remove the four screws at the edges of the bottom of the housing. Then carefully part the two
halves of the housing (the slim front panel will loosen, which is no longer needed). Do not use
any force when dismantling it.
• Plug in the Slimline-IDE-drive correctly and screw it tight (Insert the screws through both plas-
tic bushes on the small, slim adaptor board and screw them thight).
• Put the two halves of the housing together correctly and screw down the screws removed at
the beginning. Observe the optical drive with the attached board to be placed correctly.
Installation of a 2.5" SATA hard disk
www.conrad.com
• Remove the single screw for the hard insertion at the bottom and remove the cover.
• Insert the 2.5"-SATA-Hard-disk (height max. 9.5mm) into the housing and plug it to the correct

connection within the housing.
°
• Close the housing (there is a lug at the cover fixing the hard disk within the insertion).
Setup
The housing with the installed drives can be placed e.g. under a notebook or mini computer.
Connection
• Switch on your computer and wait until the operating system has finished loading (at least
Windows ME/XP/Vista required).
• Connect the low-voltage from the supplied transformer to the correct input on the rear of the
housing.
• Plug the mains transformer into a mains socket (230V~/50Hz).
• Connect the Mini-USB connector, on the rear, to a free USB2.0 port on your computer, using
the USB cable supplied.
Naturally, a conventional USB1.1 port on the computer can be used instead of a USB2.0 port.
However, in this case the transfer data rate will be very low (USB1.1, about 1MByte/sec max.).
• Window now recognises the drives automatically (depending on whether a drive, an optical
drive or both appliances has been installed).
Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Disk Drive
• This can be done easily in Windows XP (click on „administration" in the system settings, then
„computer administration", „data storage" and finally on „drive administration").
Then, select the correct hard disk drive and create a new partition. Then format this.
The procedure is quite similar in Windows Vista.
• In Windows ME however, the DOS commands „FDISK" (for partitioning) and „FORMAT" (for
formatting) are required.
Start the MSDOS prompt and enter „FDISK". Under menu option „5. Changing of current hard
drive", the external hard disk drive has to be selected. Example: If you only have one internal
hard disk drive, select hard drive „2". Afterwards, a primary partition can be created.
Exit FDISK by pressing the ESC button and reboot your computer.
Afterwards the partition on the new hard disk can be formatted, either via the Windows file
manager or with the „FORMAT" command from the MSDOS prompt (ensure it is the new hard
disk that is formatted and not the already existing hard disk drive, or partition, data loss!).

Operation

• For operation of the housing and within the installed drive, wall plug transformer provided is to
be used.
• Both the hard disk and the optical drive are available like conventional USB data media.
Plugging in and out of the USB cable during operation is possible; during running data trans-
fer (data are being written on the hard disk in the housing) it can, however, lead to loss of data.
• For writing on CDs or DVDs a corresponding software is necessary (not provided).
• Especially with small, slower computers (e.g. Netbooks) you should not set the writing speed
too high. Do not work with other programs when creating a CD/DVD. Deactivate the screen
saver if necessary; terminate all possible downloads.
Do not set up the housing vertically, because the installed drives can be damaged
when tilting over!
If the housing with the installed drives is in operation you should not move it; by this
an installed hard disk can be damaged!
Use the button „ODD ON/OFF" for turning on (switch position „ON") or off („OFF")
the optical drive.
A new hard disk must be partitioned and formatted before it appears in the Windows
file manager and before it can be used.
Alway connect the housing firstly to the wall plug transformer and then plug the trans-
former in a mains socket.
Only then the housing is to be connected to an USB port using the USB cable!
