Installation
If you do not have the expertise to perform the installation, please arrange for
the installation to be carried out by SUITABLY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL or a
suitable specialist shop!
Incorrect installation can cause damage to the plug-in card and also to your
computer and all connected devices.
Caution, lethal hazard!
Switch off the computer in which the plug-in card is to be mounted and dis-
connect all devices from the mains voltage by removing the plugs from the
mains socket! Just turning off at the on/off switch is not enough!
• Open your computer's case and carefully remove the cover.
• Locate a free PCI Express slot, remove the corresponding slot cover and insert the card
into the slot. Screw in the plug-in card fi rmly, check that it is positioned correctly in the PCI
Express slot.
To install the plug-in card in a fl at computer case, a short slot plate is enclosed.
Remove the long slot plate from the plug-in card and then install the short slot plate.
• Connect an appropriate power connection on your PC power adapter to the connection on
the plug-in card. Pay attention to the connector's correct orientation and do not use any force.
If the power connection on the plug-in card is not connected to the PC power adapt-
er, any connected USB devices will not function!
• If necessary, secure all the cables with cable ties, so they cannot obstruct your computer's
fan.
• Close the computer housing.
• Connect your computer and monitor to the mains voltage and switch on all devices.
• If your computer does not start correctly, switch it off immediately and check all the settings
and cable connections.
Before opening the computer again, it must be disconnected from the mains
voltage again, see above!

Driver installation
• After Windows has started, it automatically recognises the plug-in card as new hardware.
Cancel the automatic hardware recognition.
• Place the enclosed CD into an appropriate drive on your computer.
• Start installation of the driver software (e.g. "Setup.exe" or the like).
A restart of Windows may be required after that, before the USB3.0 ports of the
plug-in card function properly.
Connecting USB devices to the plug-in card
Important:
It is imperative that the power supply to the expansion card is connected to a corresponding
connector of your PC's power supply.
Otherwise, the USB devices connected to the plug-in card will not be recognised
correctly!
• USB 2.0/1.1 devices
It is possible, of course, to operate all "old" USB 2.0/1.1 devices with a USB 3.0 port. Simply
connect the USB device to one of the four USB ports on the plug-in card.
Use conventional USB 2.0/1.1 connection cables to connect the devices.
Normally, USB 2.0/1.1 devices are not, or only slightly, faster when operated on a USB 3.0 port.
However, if the USB 2.0 controller on the motherboard works relatively slowly it is possible,
for example, that USB 2.0 hard disks could transfer data faster via a USB 3.0 port on the
plug-in card.
• USB 3.0 devices
In order to connect a USB3.0 device to the controller, a USB3.0 cable is necessary. At fi rst
glance, the USB-A plug looks similar to a USB2.0/1.1 plug, however, it has additional internal
connector pins.
The USB-B plug on a USB 3.0 cable, however, has a different shape.
A USB 3.0 hard disk enclosure can also be operated on a USB 3.0/2.0/1.1 port via a conven-
2
tional USB 2.0/1.1 cable. However, a faster data transfer is not possible..
In order to use the fast data transfer of USB3.0, not only a USB3.0 controller is necessary but
also a USB3.0 device and an appropriate USB3.0 cable.
USB 3.0 provides a theoretical data transfer of 5 GBit (approx. 600 MByte/s). The transfer
speed in practice depends, however, on the devices involved in the data transfer (internal
and external hard disk), the type of data (many small fi les or few large fi les) and many other
factors.
