Selecting USB ports for operation of the adaptor cable
There are several types of USB ports:
1. "Low power USB port"
These can deliver a max current of 100mA, e.g. the USB port on a keyboard or the USB port
on a USB2.0/1.1 hub without a power supply unit.
These ports are not suitable for operating the adaptor cable with connected drive!
2. "High power USB port"
These USB ports can supply a maximum current of 500mA, e.g. the USB port
on a computer/notebook or the USB port on a USB hub with its own power unit.
These USB ports are suitable for operating the adaptor cable
The same applies for USB3.0 ports.
Please note:
Optical drives (CD/DVD/Blu-ray drives or writers) need a higher current to start their
motor. When writing to a CD, DVD or Blu-ray, the current consumption is also higher.
If the available current is too low, the drive might not be recognised by the computer
or the drive may suddenly disappear from control panel, fi le manager, etc. during
access.
Connection
• First, connect the optical drive to the appropriate plug on the adaptor cable.
Bear in mind that the adaptor cable is only suitable for optical slimline SATA drives
and not for SATA hard disks!
• Then, connect both of the USB plugs to two free USB ports on your computer (or to a USB
hub with its own power unit). Here, the current from two USB ports is added together (500mA
+ 500mA = 1A), which ensures operation of the hard disk.
• The drive is automatically recognised by the operating system; the drivers are contained in
the operating system.
Tips & Notes
www.conrad.com
• The blue LED on the drive plug is a power LED, the red LED is an access LED
(fl ashes/lit during read/write access).
Version 10/13
• USB devices can be connected and disconnected during operation.
You should, however, take into account that data may be corrupted or the operating system
may crash if the connection cable is disconnected while data are being transferred.
• When writing to CDs, DVDs or Blu-rays, suitable software is necessary, as with all writers.
