4 Setting Up and Connecting the Unit

The unit is designed for installation into a rack (482 mm / 19"); however,
it can also be used as a free-standing unit . For installation into a rack,
1 RS is required (1 RS = rack space = 44 .45 mm) .
Prior to making or changing any connections, switch off the DSM-...
and the units to be connected .

4.1 Signal sources

Connect analog signal sources with line level, e .g . the output of a pre-
amplifier or of a mixer, to the XLR jacks IN (17) . The jacks are designed
for balanced signals . For the connection of sources with unbalanced
signals, use adapters where the XLR contacts 1 and 3 are bridged .
Connect digital signal sources with an output that complies with the
AES/EBU standard to the jack AES/EBU (16) . At two input channels,
analog or digital input signals can be alternatively processed (Selecting
the signal source
 chapter 5 .3 .2) .
Please refer to chapter 6 for information on how to feed digital signals
from a Dante audio network to the DSM-48DT .

4.2 Power amplifiers

Connect the power amplifiers or units for further signal processing to
the XLR connectors OUT (14) .

4.3 Computer

To operate the DSM-... via remote control by means of a computer,
connect the computer to the jack
an alternative, it is also possible to control the unit via the Ethernet
interface LAN (15) .
For remote control via Ethernet (TCP/ IP), connect the jack LAN of
the DSM-... to a single computer, a local computer network, or, for
example by means of a router, to larger computer networks . Knowl-
edge of network technology is indispensable for a correct setup .
The DSM-... is preset to automatic reception of an IP address . If a
DHCP server is available on the network connected, the DHCP server
will supply the DSM-... with an IP address . If an Ethernet switch is used
to connect the DSM-... to a computer which is also set to automatic
address reception and if no DHCP server is available, the units will mu-
tually assign an address in the range 169 .254 .0 .0 – 169 .254 .255 .255 .
This may take a few minutes (depending on the computer system
used) . To facilitate the connection when no DHCP server is available,
set the computer to an address in this range and the subnet mask
to 255 .255 .0 .0 .
When a network connection has been established, the network
settings of the DSM-... can be most conveniently changed via the
menu of the control program . It will also be possible to assign a fixed
IP address to the DSM-... (

4.3.1 Notes with regard to the Ethernet interface

(DSM-...LAN only)
The Ethernet interfaces of the models DSM-26LAN and DSM-48LAN
only support a bit rate of up to 10 megabit /s .
Therefore, a 10 /100 switch must be inserted for network units
that only support 100 megabit /s (e . g . FRITZ! Box 3370) .

4.4 Mains connection

Connect the mains cable provided to the mains jack (13) and connect
the mains plug to a mains socket (230 V/ 50 Hz) .
(1), using a USB cable . As
 chapter 7 .15) .

5 Operation

Many settings can be made directly at the unit or, by means of the
control program, from the computer (
via the computer provides a well-arranged screen display; it is therefore
much more convenient and offers some additional functions, e . g .
definition of the switch-on configuration .
The functions available always depend on the access rights of the
user . The access rights are defined in the access levels (
which offer substantial configuration options .

5.1 Access levels

If you have restricted access rights, you may not be able to execute
all the operations described in the instruction manual .
Four access levels with different rights are available for config-
uration of the unit . The levels are accessed by different passwords .
The passwords are entered at the unit (menu item
chapter 5 .4 .4) or via the control program
Enter Password
(menu item "Hardware Enter Password",
The following table shows the access levels in descending order and
the corresponding passwords:
Access level
Development
Administrator
User
Locked State
Fig. 5 Factory-set passwords
* These passwords are factory-set; the user can change these passwords in the
respective access level or in a higher access level . Make sure to remember the
changed passwords!
The passwords are saved in the unit . When the unit is switched on,
it will usually be in the access level "User" . When a password is
entered, the unit will be in the corresponding access level until the
unit is switched off, a different password is entered or the access
level "Locked State" is called up . To go to the access level "Locked
State", either use the menu item
unit (
chapter 5 .4 .5) or, in the control program, the menu item
"Hardware Lock Unit" .
The operating options of a level can be restricted in the higher
level . These restrictions, however, can only be made in the control
program (
 chapter 7 .4 .3) .

5.2 Switching on /off

Prior to switching on the power amplifier connected, switch on the
DSM-... with the POWER switch (11) .
CAUTION The DSM-... offers most flexible configuration options .
Thus, it is, for example, possible that an output config-
ured to control a tweeter becomes the bass frequency
output in a different configuration .
To prevent damage to the speakers, always check whether the loaded
configuration of the DSM-... matches the arrangement of the con-
nected speakers before you switch on the power amplifiers .
The settings used when the unit was most recently operated or a
defined switch-on preset (
After usage, first switch off the power amplifiers and then switch off
the unit with the POWER switch .
