Information about the Prototype

The class T 18 Prussian passenger tank locomotive was placed into service
for the first time in 1912 and was designed as a replacement for the class
T 10, T 11 and T 12 tank locomotives. The 462 units of the class T 18 were
built by the Vulcan Works in Stettin. Thanks to its good running characteri-
stics, this design was also built by other railroads. Thus, 20 units were built
under license for the Royal Württemberg State Railroad. The Saar Railways
and the Eutin-Lübeck Railroad also had this locomotive type on their roster.
As a result, in the following 6 decades this locomotive could been found from
north to south and from east to west. This locomotive type was one of the
few designs from the provincial railroad period still in service in Era IV
starting in 1968.
The choice of driving wheels with a diameter of 1,650 mm or 64-15/16"
resulted in a maximum speed of 100 km/h or 62 mph. The two-axle pilot
and trailing trucks allowed this speed to be run both forward and in reverse
with no problem.
The different types of compartment cars were the typical passenger car
pulled by this tank locomotive right into the 1950s. After the conversion of
these three and four-axle car types to the so-called "rebuild cars", the class
78 continued to be the typical motive power for these car types.
Although the class 78 was in service for a long time, there are only a few
units that have been preserved down to the present time. One example is
a locomotive that was overhauled by the German Federal Railroad in 1885
for the 150th anniversary of railroading in Germany, and it currently stands
in the Nürnberg Transportation Museum.
