Safety Instructions
Please read all the instructions before using this device, they include impor-
tant information on its correct operation. The guarantee/warranty will be void
if damage is incurred resulting from non-compliance with the operating
instructions. We do not assume any liability for any consequential damage!
We do not assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by
improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions. The warranty
will be void in such cases.
The unauthorized conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible for
reasons of safety and approval (CE).
The product is not a toy and should be kept out of the reach of children. Install the
product out of the reach of children.
The product must not get damp or wet, it is intended only for use in dry, indoor loca-
tions.
If the power adaptor is being brought from a cold into a warm room, water conden-
sation can form inside. Let the power adaptor therefore acclimatise to the room
temperature before using it; otherwise there is the danger of a life-threatening elec-
tric shock!
Do not carelessly leave the packaging material lying around since this may become
a dangerous toy for children.
Handle the product with care; knocks, blows or even a fall from a low height can
damage it.
Start-up
• Connect the round low voltage plug of the power supply unit to the corresponding connector
"12V DC IN" on the USB network adaptor. It is located besides the RJ45 connector.
Do not use the connection „12V DC OUT". It is intended for an external device! For
this please observe the chapter "Miscellaneous" and then the section "Power sup-
ply for external drive".
• Connect the RJ45 connector of a 1:1-connected network cable to your network switch or
router.
• Insert the plug-in power unit into a (230V~/50Hz) mains socket. The LED "POWER" at the side
of the USB power supply unit lights up.
Furthermore the LED "LINK" should light up or start flashing indicating a working network con-
nection.
• Connect an USB storage device (e.g. an external 3.5"-USB-hard disc) to the USB port at the
USB network adaptor and turn it on.
• Set the switch "USB Connection" to the position "ON".
• Place the provided CD into the corresponding drive of your computer.
At the time of creating this manual the installation program was located in the folder „Driver" of
the CD; two further folders for Windows 2000 and Windows XP/Vista are available there.
Depending on your version of Windows start the corresponding program and follow the instruc-
tions of the software.
• By means of the button "Search" available USB network
adaptors can be searched; by means of "Connect" the
corresponding USB-drive is connected to the computer
(simply double-click alternatively on the recognised
Version 08/09
device).
°
Then the drive is as usual available in Windows e.g. an
additional drive letter is assigned by Windows automati-
cally (e.g. for the USB hard drive connected to the USB
network adaptor).
If you do not have aDHCP server activated(e.g. available in almost every router),
the software may fail to find the USB network adaptor.
In such a case, your computer has to be set to IP address 169.254.10.1. Then the
USB network adaptor can be searched by means of the software. The computer
has (as far as no DHCP server is working in the network) the preset fixed IP address
169.254.10.10.
By right-clicking on the USB network adaptor recognised by the software you can
select the option "View device webpage". There the IP address of the USB adaptor
has to be changed under "Network" in order to let it match to your network (e.g.
192.168.1.x). Please observe that every IP address is only to be assigned one time
in the whole network.
After configuration of the USB network adaptor your computer can be set back to
the original IP address.
Set the option „Automatic IP Setting" to „Disable" and enter the desired IP address as
described above matching your network (e.g. if you use a fixed IP address in the range
192.168.1.x enter 192.168.1.150 as long as the "150" is not used).
The „Subnet-Mask" has to be equal for all devices in the network (Standard for Windows
XP/Vista is usually 255.255.255.0).
Clicking "Submit" it is transferred to the USB network adaptor and saved.
• Due to the principle used only one computer can be use the USB drive connected to the USB
network adaptor.
If another user wants to have access to the drive select the option " Request Remote to dis-
connect" by right-clicking on the USB network adaptor in the software. A system message
".....has requested you to disconnect. Would you like to disconnect" appears on the computer
presently connected to the USB drive. If "Yes" is clicked the present connection to the USB
network adaptor is disconnected and the other user can connect to the USB network adaptor.
As shown in the picture on the right the computer presently connected to the USB drive can of
course be disconnected by the software using "Disconnect" if it is no longer needed (right-click
on the drive, then select the option "Disconnect").
The provided software has to be installed on every PC that shall have access to the
USB drive!
Miscellaneous
• Password:
The settings for the network adapter can be saved by means of a password.
If you forget the password the USB network adaptor can be reset to default settings with the
button "RESET", see below.
• Restoring default settings:
The USB network adaptor can be reset to default setting as follows:
Disconnect the USB network adaptor from the power supply. Then use a toothpick or the like
to press and hold the recessed button "RESET". Connect the USB network adaptor to the
mains supply and wait at least 5 seconds. Consequently the USB network adaptor is reset to
the default settings; you can release the "RESET"-button.
• Power supply for the external drive
The USB network adaptor has a current output for e.g. an external drive (connection
"12V DC OUT"). For warranty reasons we recommend to solely operate the USB drive
with its own power supply.
If you, however, want to use the output of the USB network adaptor nevertheless for
power supply use the particular cable provided.
Ensure that:
a) Operating voltage (12V=) has to correspond to the input voltage of the external drive
b) the polarity of the input connector of the external drive has to be constructed in a way that
the plus contact is lying at the inner contact of the input connector (Ground/GND is at the out-
er contact)
c) the construction of the connector (diameter) has to correspond with the plug
d) the power input of the external drive must not be higher than the power ouput of the power
unit provided with the USB adaptor, minus approx. 0.3A (300mA)
• Software
The provided software has to be installed on every PC that shall have access to the USB drive
at the USB network adaptor.
There can be only one connection at the same time. The simultaneous access of e.g. two com-
puters to the USB drive is not possible.
• Switch "USB Connection"
Using this switch the USB connection is disconnected without unplugging the USB device.
The USB connection is disconnected with the switch in position "OFF", activated with position
"ON".
Maintenance and Cleaning
The product does not require any maintenance, never take it apart.
Please use a dry, clean, soft cloth for cleansing. Do not use any chemical cleaning agents, they
can discolour the plastic housing.
Disposal
Electronic devices are recyclable waste and must not be disposed of in the house-
hold waste!
Dispose of the unserviceable product according to the relevant statutory regula-
tions.
