8. Connecting the hard disk to the computer

• Use the USB-Y cable to operate the hard disk housing with the installed SATA hard disk. First
connect the two USB type A plugs to two USB ports on your computer and then the miniature
USB plug to the corresponding socket on the back of the hard disk housing.
In case of a different sequence, the hard disk may not be recognised.
• Alternative to the power supply for the hard disk housing, you can also use the provided
power unit. There is a corresponding low-voltage socket on the back of the hard disk housing
for this purpose. For USB connection, you then have to use the USB type A plug with the
slightly thicker cable. The second USB plug is not required.
• If a new empty hard disk was installed in the hard disk housing, this must first be partitioned
and formatted before saving any data.
For Windows XP (similar for Windows Vista) this can easily be done via the computer
administration (click on system control in "Administration", then on "Computer administration",
"Data storage" and then on "Disk Management"). Select the right hard drive there and create
a new partition. Then allow the system to format the hard disc (a quick formatting is sufficient,
otherwise, the formatting procedure takes a very long time!).
• You can first copy data to the hard disk, e.g. with the Windows file manager, after you have
partitioned and formatted the hard disk. Now the hard disk works like a common external
USB hard disk!
• For an initial test of the hard disk and the docking station and/or playback of different
multimedia files, you should copy some data to the hard disk, e,g, MP3 files, JPG images or
videos.
As there are countless video formats and programs that can create or convert
videos, we cannot guarantee that these files can be played back via the docking
station. In this case ou should try to convert the video file with a suitable software
to a different format to be able to play it back.
• The power LED is green. In case of read/write access, a red LED blinks.
