Oil-affected items can ignite spontaneously, especially when exposed to heat
sources such as being in a tumble dryer. The items become warm, causing an
oxidation reaction to the oil. Oxidation creates heat – if the heat cannot
escape, the items can become hot enough to catch fire. Piling, stacking or
storing oil-infected items can prevent heat from escaping, creating a potential
fire hazard.
• If you need to put fabrics in the tumble dryer that contain vegetable oil, cooking oil or hair
care products, wash them first with extra detergent. This will help reduce, but not eliminate,
the risk.
• Do not dry unwashed items in the tumble dryer.
• Wash items soiled with substances like cooking oil, acetone, alcohol, petrol, kerosene, spot
removers, turpentine, waxes and wax removers in hot water with extra detergent before
drying them in the tumble dryer.
• Fabric softeners (and similar products) should be used as specified by their instructions.
• The last part of the tumble dryer cycle is a cool-down period without heat. This ensures the
items are left at a safe temperature to prevent damage.
• WARNING! Do not stop the tumble dryer before the end of a drying cycle. If you do, quickly
remove all items and spread them out for the heat to dissipate.
